Reflecting on the 2023-2024 Quail Season in Arizona: A Recap and Looking Ahead

We’ve wrapped up another thrilling quail season here in Arizona, I, Ryan Rice, Owner/Operator of AZ Quail Today, can’t help but reflect on the highlights and observations from the past months. Across various regions of the state, the Gambel’s quail once again stole the spotlight, with reports of large coveys delighting hunters. However, in southern Arizona, some hunters noted smaller numbers of birds, highlighting the regional variations in quail populations.

One notable observation was the disparity in abundance between Gambel’s and Mearns quail. While Gambel’s quail thrived, the Mearns quail population appeared less robust. The desert birds (Scaled and Gambel’s) likely thrived more so due to the more consistent rainfall in recent years during the winter months. Fortunately, the steady rain this winter bodes well for desert birds in the upcoming 2024-2025 season as well!

Looking ahead, AZ Quail Today is excited to announce the launch of a podcast featuring hunters gathering around the table to discuss their experiences and insights. We plan to host these discussions a couple of times a month, providing updates from biologists, hunting experts, and enthusiasts. Stay tuned to our social media channels, especially Instagram, for the latest updates and announcements regarding the podcast.

If you have any questions or suggestions for podcast topics, we welcome your input. Feel free to reach out via direct message on Instagram, and we’ll do our best to address your inquiries. Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to connecting with you throughout the offseason. Happy hunting!
