What’s Happening Now – Mid-December 2015
***The AQT $250 Cabela’s Gift Card Raffle is Now Open***
Mearns’ quail numbers are up and the hunting has been as good as was forecast. Regarding Gambel’s quail, the central part of the state seems to have improved but not as much as expected. Good news, the southeast part of the state is producing good numbers of Scaled, Gambel’s, and Mearns’ quail. Stay on ’em!
Below is a new section we hope to include in each What’s Happening Now post. We value your input and interaction with what we post here so we’ve provided a form to submit your comments. We’ll summarize the comments we receive into a condensed, overall response to include in the next What’s Happening Now post.
What do you think?
For some of the long time bird hunters in Arizona or elsewhere, what are some of the big changes you have seen in bird hunting over the years? Such as, do Mearns’ and Scaled quail run more than they used to? If so, do you think it’s from more hunting pressure? Do Gambel’s and Scaled quail disappear easier than they used to? Have they adapted into a smarter bird or not? Let us know your thoughts using the form below! We’ll summarize the comments we receive into a condensed, overall response to include in the next What’s Happening Now post.
Tip: When the Birds Win
When the birds win. It’s exciting to see a good sized covey of birds flush into what looks to be a situation that will work in your favor – good cover, good terrain, big covey. But they just won’t set, won’t cooperate, and they fly again and again, flushing wild. They just plain get away. It happens – accept that it’s a part of hunting unpredictable desert quail. Give those birds their due, smile, and move on.
Sportsmanship: Where To Hunt Quail
As outdoorsmen most of us know there are certain unwritten rules that apply to sportsmanship and ethics. One of those is being invited to hunt with a friend in “their” place to hunt. It is understood that we do not go back to that spot, and, even worse, bring other people with us to that spot, or, with today’s technology, sending others the GPS locations. Most all outdoorsmen work hard with blood, sweat, and tears to find certain areas to hunt or camp. Over the years many good hunting areas have been ruined because of other hunters taking friends, and then those friends taking other friends.
Is it wise to post an open invitation on the internet, not knowing anything about the person or people who might respond to join you? The invitee most likely has very good intentions of simply including others in on their hunt but please keep in mind, there is a good chance that those you take with you will probably come back with their friends…and those friends with other friends and so on. Every time returning to the same spot.
Then there are others who hire guides for one reason only – to learn good areas to hunt. Those guides have also worked very hard to find productive areas for clients. So the question is, is it ethical/fair to go back to an area you have paid a guide to be in?
Of course, public land is public land and anyone can hunt anywhere on public land with a hunting license, but give this some thought – and if you didn’t see this on CouesWhitetail.com, here’s a link for you to read further and make up your own mind: coueswhitetail.com/forums/topic/62311-wow-really/ It’s an interesting read.
A Primary Purpose of AQT
One of the primary reasons AZQuailToday.com exists, is to help promote the tent camps provided for children (especially underprivileged children) and special needs individuals through Arizona Outdoor Adventures. This short video has nothing to do with quail hunting, although as an outdoorsman, I know you will enjoy it. While providing the camps, we have great opportunities to see some unique wild life situations, and this video displays some of the wildlife that we and the kids get to see during the camp season. All the videos and photos were taken during the camp season.

Hunting Vest Accessory Recommendations
A helpful addition to Q5 Outdoor Products is the Accessory Recommendations page. These are products that I have found to be greatly beneficial while upland bird hunting. Though I have not personally used all the products listed, others I have hunted with have so I’ve included these products as well. – Dan Priest
